A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH FOR DESIGN OF RIGID OVERLAYS ON RIGID PAVEMENTS

This paper describes a simple systematic procedure, which is being adopted in India for the overlay design of rigid pavements. The basic criteria of overlay design should prevent the flexural stresses, induced in the surfacing layer and the existing pavement, from exceeding the corresponding flexural strength of concrete. The design of overlay for airfields and roads is specified, and a computer program for the evaluation of their rigid pavements is also being prepared. For the evaluation of rigid airfield pavements, the ACN-PCN method is being adopted, and the local classification number (LCN), defining the load of an aircraft, is also used sometimes. Indian Roads Congress Special Publication No. 17 presents recommendations about overlays on cement concrete pavements, especially for roads. The paper gives its specifications or formulae for: (1) traffic; (2) condition of existing pavement; (3) partially bonded overlay; (4) unbonded overlay; and (5) fully bonded overlay. As far as possible, existing cement concrete pavements, requiring strengthening, should be overlaid at the first sign of distress, while the slab is still only slightly cracked.
