MAXIMUM DRY DENSITY PREDICTION FROM SOIL CLASSIFICATION DATA

This short paper presents a method for estimating the maximum dry density (IS light compaction test value) of a CL, SC or SC-CL soil from soil classification data. Soil samples were collected from the north coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, India. These soils were classified by the Unified Soil Classification System, after sieve analysis, liquid limit, plastic limit, and IS light compaction tests were conducted. Using linear regression, maximum dry density was estimated as a linear function of the logarithm of the gradation constant, which is derived from soil classification test data. Correlation coefficients were compared for each soil group, and found to be significant.
