FUEL EFFICIENT AND GREEN - THE FUTURE HEAVY DUTY DIESEL

The truck diesel engine is facing the challenge of worldwide emission regulations which are becoming increasingly severe throughout the 1990's. The diesel engine will continue to be the only realistic powerplant for long-distance trucks but the base engine will need to be much developed to meet the emission limits whilst maintaining its excellent fuel economy. Innovative research is essential in order to find cost-effective solutions. In this paper, Ricardo presents and discusses the key technologies that are being developed to address these challenges and reviews the long term potential of the truck diesel engine in Europe, the USA and Japan.
