REPORT ON THE JOINT CONFERENCE ENO FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND BOARD OF CONSULTANTS, OCTOBER 22 AND 23, 1975. PART 1: RESTRUCTURING THE RAILROADS IN THE UNITED STATES. PART 2: EFFICIENCY OF VARIOUS TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS

This is a summary of presentations of a panel and the ensuing discussion. The presentations include U.S. Railway Association's plan for restructuring railroads of the Northeast-Midwest region; evaluation of USRA Final System Plan; Amtrak's role in the restructured rail system; and major problems facing all U.S. railroads. Among the discussion topics were comparison of rail and truck profits; comparisons with highway development; branch line abandonment, competition between railroads; labor problems; and the Northeast corridor. Part 2, discusses and compares energy use and efficiency of various modes of transportation. Considered are factors involved in energy consumption and some proposals for energy reduction.
