ADVANCED GASOLINE COMBUSTION SYSTEMS FOR FUEL ECONOMY AND EMISSIONS

It is anticipated that future exhaust emission legislation for passenger cars will not only require reductions of toxic exhaust components but in addition will stipulate fuel economy improvement. Whilst current powertrain technologies have enabled tremendous advances to be made, there is a need for new combustion system technology which will enable the fuel economy and emission trade-off to be significantly improved. Research work has identified two novel combustion systems based on stratification which provide the basis for improving the fuel economy and emission relationship. The paper will describe these novel approaches and present experimental data to demonstrate their potential against contemporary technology. For the covering abstract see IRRD 873243.
