FORUM ON FUTURE DIRECTIONS IN TRANSPORTATION R&D, WASHINGTON, D.C., MARCH 6-7, 1995. CLOSING REMARKS

The closing remarks briefly review themes expressed during the forum. These include partnership, not only explicit partnerships but also the broad concept that we must all work together; the importance of performance measures; the importance of listening to the user and customer; technology deployment; system assessment; a strong role for university research, both as a performer and as the basic source of professionals who will design and operate the transportation systems of the future; and intermodalism and research that cuts across all modes. In conclusion, the work of the forum is placed in context and forum participants are encouraged to contact the Committee on Transportation Research and Development and its subcommittees to extend and elaborate on the thoughts expressed at the forum.
