FORUM ON FUTURE DIRECTIONS IN TRANSPORTATION R&D, WASHINGTON, D.C., MARCH 6-7, 1995. CHAIRMAN'S REMARKS

The forum chairman comments on the context in which the forum took place, which is one of a world facing unprecedented changes, and on the challenges which the transportation community is facing, as well as the tremendous opportunities. He points out that the forum was convened in an environment in which the federal establishment, through the National Science and Technology Council, chaired by President Clinton, is reevaluating the scope and organization of federal research in nine areas, including the transportation field. He sees the forum as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help develop and shape the federal transportation R&D program. He discusses what the forum examined and how it brought the transportation community together in a unique way. The remainder of his comments address the fundamental points to be noted as the federal transportation R&D agenda for the 21st century is shaped. He concludes with a final comment on the challenge before the transportation community.
