MAKING LEAD PAINT REMOVAL SAFE IN CONNECTICUT

The Connecticut Road Industry Surveillance Project (CRISP) is a comprehensive medical surveillance program designed to prevent lead toxicity in bridge workers. This demonstration project of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) maintains information on the blood lead levels of bridge workers and identifies exposure early to prevent lead toxicity. Nearly 1,300 bridge construction and rehabilitation workers were registered as of September 1994. CRISP has generated sufficient data now to determine its impact and estimate its effectiveness in the construction industry. This article provides an update on CRISP, including an overview of the lead exposure problem, program development since its inception in 1992, and the implications of collected data for protecting workers exposed to lead. Based on the available data, CRISP has been effective in controlling lead poisoning in bridge workers.
