HIGH-TECH HIGHWAY SAFETY: RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AT THE FEDERAL HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION

The Federal Highway Administration's research and development efforts are discussed in a report titled "A Summation - Innovations in Traffic Control," which describes the most recent advances in safety control systems. Many of the systems are being tested nationwide. This article categorizes the agency's research and development activities into four areas: 1) truck-overturn warnings, 2) real-time controls, 3) smart controls, and 4) human factors research. Extensive research in the area of intelligent transportation systems is evident in each category. In-vehicle technology and roadside measures that offer real-time information on traffic and environmental conditions should result in even higher levels of road safety in the future.
