WORK ZONE INTRUSION ALARMS GARNER ATTENTION OF FEDS, STATES, CREWS

Just over half of the states in the nation participated in a Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) study to evaluate work zone intrusion alarm systems. Work zone intrusion alarms are designed to activate a warning for workers to take evasive action when errant vehicles have penetrated work zone barriers. Concurrent with the SHRP study, the New York State Department of Transportation conducted a similar survey of intrusion alarms. This article describes various types of intrusion alarms and reveals the findings of the SHRP and New York studies. Overall, investigators believe that these devices enhance safety in the work zone, but do not add to a worker's sense of security.
