Las Vegas, Nevada, is excited about their title of "fastest growing city" in the United States; however, Las Vegas is beginning to feel growing pains. The former Vegas "Strip" has been transformed into a sprawling urban center complete with urban ills, such as crime, air pollution, traffic congestion, and overcrowded schools. While economic development is encouraged, city services have had a hard time keeping up. This article chronicles the growth of Las Vegas and describes the planning currently taking place. Many land uses are proposed, meeting with both approval and disapproval from long-time residents and newcomers. Las Vegas planners feel that the growth will continue as long as the economic boom continues.
