NEW INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BOLSTERS A GROWING CITY

The closure of Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas, created an opportunity to convert a former military base into a commercial airport. The City of Austin overwhelmingly approved the conversion and construction began in November 1994. This article describes the 4,100 acre site that is being redeveloped, the project milestones, and the project schedule. The cost of the new airport is expected to be $611.7 million.
