IMPROVING TRANSIT SPEEDS THROUGH TRAFFIC ENGINEERING MEASURES

Coordination of transit and traffic operations can do much to improve transit performance on urban streets. This paper describes and quantifies the effectiveness of several traffic engineering measures intended to improve transit speeds on city streets in San Francisco, California. Many of the before-and-after tests described were performed as part of the city's on-going Transit Preferential Streets program over the past several years.
