Traffic congestion in metropolitan Melbourne, is estimated to cost $1.8 billion per annum. VicRoads, which is Victoria's road and traffic authority, has introduced traffic and road use management strategies aimed at: (1) improving traffic flow to reduce travel time and enhance the safety and reliability of travel on freeways and selected urban arterial roads; (2) enhancing its Urban Traffic Management System to improve traffic system operations and enable real time information on travel conditions to be provided to road users, and (3) monitoring the performance of the traffic system to allow improved assessment of the effectiveness of road and traffic management programs.
