TRAFFIC SAFETY GOES TO SCHOOL

The author, also known as Captain Jerry, explains the Captain Jerry Traffic Safety Program in Sacramento, California which educates children on all relevant components of traffic safety: safe travel to and from school, using seat belts, walking in crosswalks, watching for cars, proper use of a pedestrian traffic signal, obeying bicycle rules, and understanding and avoiding strangers. Students receive a caricature map of their school and the surrounding community, brochures, stickers and POGS to take home and share with their families. Before a presentation, Captain Jerry visits a school to survey the surrounding area, reviews adjacent signing and striping for accuracy and familiarizes himself with specific situations. Captain Jerry (Jerry Way) is an Engineering Technician III with the Department of Public Works' Traffic Engineering Division, City of Sacramento.
