SHIPPER, CARRIER, AND CONSULTANT PERSPECTIVES OF EDI: STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION IN THE MOTOR CARRIER INDUSTRY

This article presents some managerially relevant perspectives on Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) adoption. By interviewing respondents from shipper, carrier, and consultant organizations the research will address the following research questions: (1) Which departments initially adopt EDI in organizations? (2) What motivates shippers and carriers to begin EDI implementation? (3) What are the barriers preventing EDI implementation? (4) What successful strategies are used to overcome barriers? Based upon the in-depth responses from interviews, a model of EDI adoption and implementation is presented which may improve the understanding of the resistance to EDI adoption as well as other forms of organizational change.
