STABILITY OF A RAILWAY CUTTING IN MICACEOUS SILTSTONES

Instability of a partially completed cutting was arrested by temporary drainage and careful monitoring. Analysis indicated that the final cutting would be unstable due to the low shear strength of thin layers of silty clay. Permanent anchors were adopted to provide a stable slope.
