Replacement highway bridges now need to meet the conflicting demands of longer span, heavier loading, accidental impact, solid parapets, minimal disruption during construction, maintenance and aesthetic appearance, all preferably within the same construction depth. This paper examines ideas and innovations which aim to meet these challenges within existing technology and construction skills. Innovations include the use of half-through construction for decks, monolithic piers, and the optimum use of steel and concrete proportionate to their advantages.
