Types of economic concrete section and methods of construction for bridges are reviewed generally. Durability performance (alkali-silica reaction and corrosion) is then considered, while indicating how these issues can now be dealt with, in design terms. Most of the paper is then devoted to the role of concrete in the context of the motorway widening programme; this covers the use of concrete generally, before outlining the options for both under and overbridges, involving precast and insitu concrete solutions. The key factors, unique to motorway widening roads, are identified, and it is demonstrated that there are suitable concrete options to cover the vast majority of situations.
