PLANNING OF ROAD NETWORK IN MOUNTAINOUS REGION

This paper discusses the planning of roads in mountainous regions where the demands of social and economic development have to be balanced with degradation of the environment. The planning of a road is seen as part of an overall development plan. The method described involves establishing a hierarchy among the settlements to be connected, based on the availability of appropriate resources and institutions, and linking them by a minimum road length. A sample of 346 villages in India were also surveyed to assess the impact of accessibility on socio-economic factors. For the covering abstract see IRRD 873033.
