HANGING LAKE TUNNELS - NEW STYLE OF MECHANIZED ROCK EXCAVATION

Drill rigs mounting a new generation hydraulic rock drill featuring more than 50 percent higher performance are available from Atlas Copco. In conjunction with the new rock drill, refined control systems are built into drill operation, to handle the higher drilling output and retain the economy of both drill rig and drill string components. High performance rock drills and automatic controls are prominent features of the Rocket Boomer, a drill rig intended for tunnel contractors. Two Rocket Boomers were successfully used for the construction of the Hanging Lake Tunnels on the Interstate I70 highway extension project. Traditional praxis in the USA has for a long time been to support underground excavation with steel arches and timber structures. Hanging Lake was one of the projects to apply NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method), a technique that combines rock excavation and rock reinforcement in a systematic manner. The NATM technique adopts easily to mechanized equipment, like rigs for drilling and rock bolting. The outcome was safe and efficient tunnel progress, rock excavation completed four months ahead of schedule. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 873033.
