THE X FACTOR IN THE TRAFFIC SCENARIO
The article discusses several aspects of automobile road safety, including active and passive safety, but although much progress has been made in improving the design of cars, the major unknown factor in the traffic scenario is man. It is suggested that the biggest hazard is the unpredictability of drivers and their unconcern of their own driving ability. Most responsible car manufacturers have set up permanent project teams to conduct crash and other tests to develop greater margins of safety for cars involved in collisions. Even the safest vehicle is lethal if it is not handled with great care and attention. The unknown human factor could be eliminated if all drivers had acquired a safe method for dealing with hazards and applied it instinctively.
