"ASSEMBLY-LINE" DECK SPEEDS BRIDGE RENOVATION

A honeycomb-design steel bridge deck in which heavy duty 5 inch, 4-way steel grid decking was installed by assembly- line methods is described. In this renovation project, crews were organized into 5 teams. Two mobile cranes were used to break and rip out deteriorated deck. The crew then installed 37-foot steel grid panels on bare stringers, welded panels in place, built, curbside, and poured concrete into the steel grid panels. Initially crews laid 2 deck panels a day. A lane was completed at a rate of nine grid deck panels a day. Installation speed picked up significantly as crews became more familiar with the steel grid decking and eveloped the assembly-line technique. Installation crews moved faster than the deck removal team. Details of the work are outlined.
