ON TO FUNCTIONAL ASPHALT MIXES

This is the final report of the "Asphalt technology" working group, summarizing its research activities since 1990 into the development of a new asphalt mix design procedure for the Netherlands. The working group was supervised by the Netherlands Centre for Research and Contract Standardization in Civil and Traffic Engineering (CROW). Based on the functional properties of an asphalt pavement a scheme is developed for the new mix design procedure. The design procedure described in this report is for a standard level, i.e. for application in situations that are already known. Many asphalt mixes are evaluated with respect to compactability and resistance to permanent deformation. The gyrator and the repeated creep test are used for this purpose respectively. Criteria are derived for both tests. Other important criteria discussed are those for the dynamic stiffness and the resistance to fatigue. Finally attention is paid to compatibility and resistance to ageing.
