APPLICATION OF EMULSCEMENT IN PRACTICE

TOEPASSING VAN EMULSCEMENT IN DE PRAKTIJK

This article discusses the backgrounds that have led to the application of Emulscement as a material for a bound roadbase as part of the reconstruction of the N275 road in the province of Limburg, the Netherlands. With the Emulscement product cement and bitumen emulsion are applied as binders in combination for the binding of asphalt granulates. In the reconstruction project Emulscement was used for binding asphalt granulates containing tar and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). The asphalt granulates are encapsulated by the bitumen emulsion, and in this way the PAH is largely immobilized. This explains the favourable leaching behaviour of Emulscement in cold recycling. Another advantage of Emulscement is the absence of reflective cracking in the asphalt overlay. The approach of the project with respect to the role of the commissioner of the work, the contract specifications, the construction method (mix-in-plant), and the environmental aspects are briefly discussed.
