NOISE EMISSIONS FROM TWO HEAVY DUTY MOTOR VEHICLES REGARDED AS LOW NOISE VEHICLES

The aim of this study is to examine a Scania citybus and an Ontario citybus according to the German Criteria for Low Noise Vehicles in Annex XXI to 49, section 3 of the Road Licensing Regulations (Strassen-Verkehrs-Zulassungs-Ordnung, StVZO). These regulations correspond in some parts to the Swedish Regulations concerning the External Noise Emissions from Heavy Duty Motor Vehicles, environment category C1 (TSVFS 1992:25). The tests are included in a project from the research programme 1989/1990 between the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (SwEPA) and the Swedish Motor Vehicle Inspection Company (ASB). The Scania citybus, equipped with a DSC1127 diesel engine, exceeded only the compressed air noise emission standard according to the German Criteria for Low Noise Vehicles while the Ontario citybus, equipped with a GM 5.71 gasoline engine, exceeded the driving, compressed air and omnidirectional noise emission standards according to the same regulation. The only noise emission standard that both vehicles had no problem with was the engine brake noise. Both vehicles failed to meet the driving and compressed air noise emission standards according to the Swedish Regulation TSVFS 1992:25. Comparison between the vehicles show that the Scania citybus has lower noise emissions for all types of noise but none of the vehicles can be considered as a low noise emission vehicle. (A)
