THE MODAL CHOICE OF FREIGHT CUSTOMERS
GODSKUNDERS TRANSPORTMEDELSVAL
The object was to estimate what values companies place on transport cost, transport time, reliability of service, damage risk and service frequency. The method was based on both revealed and stated preferences. Of those selected, 87% responded. The criterion was that the company should employ road hauliers; many also employed rail transport. The freight market is not homogeneous. Average lorry load is worth SEK 300,000. Hauliers cost more than own transport. Average haul takes 18 hours at SEK 30. Average damage frequency during transport is 0.5%. Companies transport more valuable freight by road than by rail. Average time by rail is 54 hours and the cost SEK 27,800, by road 18 hours and SEK 2500. A model has been constructed for modal choice. Many companies state that their freight cannot be carried by the alternative mode; this is most pronounced for road freight. 55% of road freight, and 20% of rail freight, must be regarded as unchangeable.
