ROAD USERS DEMAND FOR TRANSPORT

TRAFIKANTERNAS KRAV PAA KOMFORT OCH KVALITATIV ANALYS

The object was to find, by group discussions, what Swedish motorists demand from roads in terms of comfort, what discomfort may arise, and how this can be remedied. Demand for comfort cannot be isolated from demand for safety. For instance, roads should be wide since one can then drive faster and need not queue/can overtake more easily, which makes for safer driving. The following were regarded as important when driving: good maintenance/correct surfacing, rapid travel/wide, straight road, low traffic intensity/even traf rhythm, careful drivers, good cars, pleasant stopping places/pleasant environment, timely signposting but not too much, good/correct winter maintenance, lighting, clearly visible road edge markings, properly superelevated bends, good visibility, game fences. It was found difficult to define comfort - it covered both road, vehicle and stress. Discomfort is all that can cause physical effects e.g. irritation or bad temper, or mental effects such as stress.
