METHODS FOR MEASUREMENT OF SMOKE FROM DIESEL VEHICLES IN TRAFFIC

METODER FOER ROEKMAETNING PAA DIESELFORDON I TRAFIK

This report describes an investigation and estimation of methods for smoke measurement in the exhaust from diesel fuelled vehicles. In Sweden the method of measurement of smoke at constant full load of the engine is applicable when controlling the smoke density in connection to the yearly vehicle inspection. The smoke measurement is carried out with the driving wheels of the vehicle on free rolling rollers and the load of the engine is developed by the use of the brakes of the vehicles. The ongoing development of more powerful engines and the application of electronics in vehicles have made it difficult to use the applied method and in some cases have made it impossible to use this method because the fuel injection is cut off when pressing the brake of the vehicle. The possibility of using the method with free acceleration of the engine as an alternative has been discussed in the report. (A)
