CROSS SECTIONAL SURVEY OF WINTER MAINTENANCE. TESTS WITH REDUCED SALTING IN 1993-94

TALVIHOIDON POIKKILEIKKAUSSEURANTA. SUOLAUKSEN RAJOITUSKOKEILUT 1993-94

The purpose of this study was to gather information about the impact of reduced salting of main highways on the amount of maintenance work and cost, as well as on the condition of these roads. The experiment was conducted at some 60 sites in different parts of southern and central Finland. At some sites salting was practically given up, whereas other sites were treated with less salt than normally. The results show that the maintenance cost went up by 10 to 30 percent with both types of reduction and that the number of days with winter conditions on the highways doubled.
