ROAD MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. A PRELIMINARY STUDY
TIENPITO JA KESTAVA KEHITYS. ALUSTAVA TARKASTELU
The aim of this study was to give practical interpretations to the concept of sustainable development in relation to road management in its component parts: planning, design, construction, maintenance, and improvement. The report begins by a short discussion concerning the definitions of sustainable development and the tasks given to the National Road Administration by the Finnish law. Then a presentation of the environmental policy of the Road Administration follows. Programs to enter a new development path in transport policy are then presented. An attempt is made to build a hierarchy of targets and means to reach these targets such that it could be used in road management.
