PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT IN STATEWIDE TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

This paper describes the process the state of Washington is pursuing to meaningfully involve citizens in the transportation decisions of the next two decades. The goal of the Washington State Department of Transportation's (WSDOT) Public Involvement Program is to achieve the agency's mission through soliciting the public's involvement using both qualitative and quantitative techniques that meet both the department and public's needs. Also, the program is geared to meet federally mandated requirements, such as the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act. Information is provided for other states regarding principles and strategies to involve the public in transportation planning and decision making.
