HSM-SIMULATION--BASED PLANNING METHOD FOR CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

This paper demonstrates that a simulation-based methodology is appropriate for modeling construction projects, which are characteristically random in nature due to site conditions and dynamic based on available resources. The hierarchical simulation modeling (HSM) method, a simulation-based technique, for planning of construction projects is presented. HSM arrives at an advanced framework for planning via the enhancement and combination of the concepts of work breakdown structure and process modeling. The basis of the method is formed by hierarchical and modular simulation constructs. HSM concepts and its advantages are illustrated in a modeling exercise of an actual bridge construction project--Peace River Bridge.
