GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT AND CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR ENGINEER-PLANNERS

Civil engineers are likely to be called upon to assume a more prominent role in addressing global environmental problems. The solutions to these problems will require expertise in urban planning and development. Consequently, civil engineers must improve their ability to effectively communicate with planners, political decision makers, and the community at an international level. Some formal training in urban and regional planning as part of the undergraduate civil engineering curricula has been suggested and is being debated. This paper discusses the need for continuing education programs in urban planning for the practicing engineer-planner. This approach is offered as an alternative to requiring planning education for all undergraduate civil engineering students. Preliminary recommendations regarding the basic content and delivery of these programs and courses are presented.
