POTENTIAL FOR SEEPAGE EROSION OF LANDSLIDE DAM. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by Meyer, Schuster, and Sabol, published in this journal (Volume 120, Number 7, July 1994), is presented. The discusser states that the Castle Creek blockage near Mount St. Helens should be referred to as an earthflow rather than debris avalanche. Day also comments that the obtained effective cohesion values are unreasonable given the nature of the earthflow and could lead to the dangerous conclusion that the earthflow is stable. Day questions the need for the extensive seepage erosion study, implying that it would be inappropriate to use this earthflow as a permanent dam. Discussion is followed by closure from Meyer and Schuster.
