ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF ALTERNATIVE FUELS
This article recounts the experience of North Miami, Florida in its use of alternative fuel to power its municipal fleet and generators at city facilities. The city has more than 125 "dual fuel" vehicles that operate on compressed natural gas (CNG), using gasoline or diesel fuel only as backup. CNG is a cleaner and more economic alternative to gasoline and diesel, with one dekatherm (therm) of 130-octane CNG (equivalent to roughly one gallon of gasoline) producing one-tenth the pollutants and costing less than 70 cents per therm. In addition, generators at the city's water treatment plant and city hall have been converted to CNG operation, providing additional savings.
