TRANSIT SIGNAL PRIORITY: A REGIONAL IMPLEMENTATION

King County Department of Metropolitan Services (formerly Metro Transit) has been a leader in the transit industry in developing and implementing innovative systems to improve service to its ridership. In 1992, it was awarded The American Public Transit Association's Public Transportation System, Outstanding Achievement Award as the best transit system in North America. Previously, it has introduced technologies such as an Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) system for tracking and security as well as Automatic Passenger Counters (APC) and Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) to improve system operations. All of these innovations now fall under the rubric of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and in particular that division known as Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS).
