INTERMODAL TERMINAL ACCESS - CHALLENGES TO TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERS

Transportation engineers should be concerned with intermodal freight transportation issues. ISTEA contains mandates that specify the need to include freight transportation issues in the planning process and to involve local MPOs in decision-making and resource allocation. Benefits from improved access to intermodal terminals include economic development and job creation. This paper highlights several issues related to intermodal terminal access. The concerns of transportation engineers are identified and examples of techniques and projects to accommodate the growing number of trucks and unit trains are presented.
