HOW GEORGIA PREDICTS ASPHALT RUTTING

After 10 years of use, the Georgia DOT-developed loaded wheel tester shows that it can indicate rut susceptibility of specific asphalt mixes--at a relatively low cost. The triple-track testing machine and beam sample compactor can be bought from Pavtec Engineering, Inc. for about $35,000. A French unit and compactor that do the same job cost about $200,000. The LWT can be used to supplement SHRP testing. Mixes may meet SHRP design criteria, but the LWT can proof-test the designs.
