THE ECONOMIC LOCOMOTIVE

This article explains why transport is exceptionally important to the USA, which has very large distances between its different industrial centres, and describes some of its contributions to the USA's strong trading position. Transport of all modes is more efficient than ever before in the USA, both nationally and internationally. The rail industry has had the largest productivity improvement since 1979 of any American industry. Trucking companies have significantly improved their costs, productivity, and performance. Transport providers are developing information systems, which allow them to control and monitor traffic flows, eliminate paperwork, improve communications, and raise productivity. As a result, there are improved, more reliable services at the lowest possible costs, at a time when American companies demand quality transport services. Different transport modes are working together as partners more than ever before.
