OUTLINE RECOMMENDATIONS ON SEAT BELT SYSTEMS IN MINIBUSES AND COACHES

These recommendations refer to the installation of seat belt systems in the UK, in vehicles not originally fitted with any anchorage points for at least some seating positions. They do not represent an alternative to the legal test requirements that a seat belt anchorage must meet. Section 1 outlines the technical and installation requirements of existing UK legislation for: (1) vehicle categories; (2) seat belt assemblies; (3) location of anchorages; and (4) seating of anchorages. Section 2 provides guidelines for retrofitting of seat belt assemblies, covering: (1) location of anchorages within a vehicle; (2) design of installation; (3) details of the threaded attachment; (4) details of the auxiliary structural part; and (5) installation of the seat belt assembly. The Appendix illustrates and describes some typical seat belt configurations for minibuses, for both forward-facing and side-facing seats; the illustrations show both recommended and non-recommended configurations of seat belt installations.
