ROAD LENGTHS IN GREAT BRITAIN 1994

This report presents detailed figures for lengths of roads of different classes in km, to the nearest 0.1km, for different parts of Great Britain. Lengths are given for the following classes of roads: (1) motorways; (2) trunk roads; (3) principal roads; and (4) minor roads, including B roads, C roads and unclassified roads. For all classes except motorways, lengths are given in built-up areas (with speed limits of 40mph or less) and non-built-up areas (with higher speed limits). The different parts of Great Britain, for which lengths are given, are: (1) Great Britain as a whole; (2) England; (3) Wales; (4) Scotland; (5) the Department of Transport (DOT) regions of England; and (6) the individual local highway authorities. The lengths are those recorded on 1 April 1994. Road length information is used extensively by UK government departments. Estimates of travel in veh km are derived as products of road length and average traffic flow, and are used to produce trends in road usage over time. Such data are basic to decisions about road planning and road maintenance, and are also applied to estimate accident rates.
