DEVELOPING A SAFER TAXI INDUSTRY

This report presents the findings of an examination of the taxi industry in Victoria. The report finds that the majority of taxi drivers carry out their duties in a professional manner but that element in the industry are prepared to defraud, abuse, attack an treat with the utmost contempt their clients and others involved the industry. The current regulatory body, VicRoads, has been sh to be completely inept in handling the industry. The report make various recommendations for the future of the industry, including establishment of a new Taxi Registry, with new powers to regulate industry. Other recommendations concern such matters as identification, licensing and training of drivers, vehicle inspec and the abandonment of self-regulation.
