MEETING MARINERS' NEEDS FOR ELECTRONIC CHARTS

Because there is now a large number of ECS in use at sea, and because it is now recognized that significant quantities of officially- produced data for use in ECDIS are unlikely to be available much before the end of this century, some hydrographic offices are being urged to provide high quality digital data for use in the former systems, as well as in the longer term providing data for the latter. This paper describes the work the UK Hydrographic Office is doing to establish digital chart services for both types of system.
