EQUIVALENT SIMILARITY TECHNIQUE FOR THREE-DIMENSIONAL PHOTOELASTIC STUDY OF SHIP STRUCTURES

Stress concentration intensities at the corners of very large deck opening of a naval ship were studied by means of 3-D photoelastic model experimental analysis. To obtain accurate results, both the geometrical scaling and the structural detailing of the model employed the equivalent similarity technique (EST). A model built with a suitable photoelastic sensitive material with adhesive joining was found to be satisfactory. The EST is described and results of the study are presented.
