EFFICIENT METHOD FOR ESTIMATING FAILURE PROBABILITY OF STRUCTURE USING MONTE CARLO SIMULATION

Monte Carlo simulation is an effective method to estimate the failure probability of complex structures involving many mutually dependent failure modes. However, since this method requires a large number of structural analyses, it is desirable to develop a method to improve the computational efficiency. For this purpose, a new type of importance sampling method in which a concept of equivalent failure surface is introduced is proposed. Its effectiveness is demonstrated through a simple example of a truss structure.
