SURF-RIDING, YAW INSTABILITY AND LARGE HEELING OF SHIPS IN FOLLOWING/QUARTERING WAVES

States of surf-riding are identified for one wave length and arbitrarily selected vessel heading. They represent the stationary solutions of the coupled, non-linear system of motion equations. Stability analysis with simultaneous consideration of the longitudinal and lateral directions on the wave is used to identify the areas of stable and unstable surf-riding. Oscillatory surf-riding can exist in quartering waves. Study of transient behaviour indicates specific mechanisms which can be responsible for the development of considerable heel, even when the vessel's metacentric height is kept high.
