NEURAL NETWORK-BASED AUTOPILOT FOR TANKER CONNING

The article examines the progress of research into applying neural-network learning techniques to automated tanker control. A new type of "intelligent" autopilot is envisaged that will learn ship manoeuvring dynamics through experience, allowing the neuro- controller to apply rudder and engine speed control in the same manner as humans.
