IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW CLASSIFICATION OF EUROPEAN INLAND WATERWAYS

Because of the evolution of inland navigation and, in particular, the continuous growth of push-towing, a new classification of the European inland waterways became absolutely necessary. A study was conducted by PIANC and based on the proposals formulated in their report, the European Conference of Ministers of Transport in Paris, as well as the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe conducted on their side further studies. Both organisations officially adopted the same new European classification in 1992. A new map of the European waterways has been drawn up.
