RISK-BASED PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT OF MAINTENANCE DREDGING: DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF THE RELIABILITY-BASED DREDGING DECISION (RBD3) MODEL

The US Army Corps of Engineers is developing and applying a risk-based approach to address maintenance dredging cost, reliability, and budgetary issues. Using data from the Lower Mississippi River for a case study application, the ongoing research has focused on the development of the reliability-based dynamic dredging decision model (RBD3). The RBD3 is an optimization model that incorporates uncertain information about predicted navigation channel dimensions and dredging requirements to estimate channel reliability and dredging costs.
